Electives

Students in grades 5th-8th have the opportunity to take two elective courses each trimester. These electives are worked into a middle school schedule. Students take their core classes with their two grade level teachers and their electives will be offered by a different teacher. 

Broadcasting

This course examines news, sports, live broadcasting, and internet related telecommunications. This class will focus on live remote broadcasts from various weekly events on campus. Students choosing this course will experience a full news production of videotaping, editing, sound, writing, teleprompting and on set designing.

Chess

The focus of the chess elective is to teach students the game of chess. Instruction includes developing the right approach and etiquette for the game, learning to assess tactical situations, experimenting with various openings, and analyzing middle and end-game strategies. The term concludes with an internal chess tournament.

Creative Writing

This creative writing class is designed for students who would like to focus on fiction writing through lectures, assigned readings, group discussions, brainstorming and writing exercises, and poetry. This class also emphasizes the use of writing workshops which use peer feedback and peer critiques.

Gardening

STEAM is committed to a future in which all children become knowledgeable, healthy adults who understand the basics of growing food, can apply science principles to garden ecosystems, steward the natural world, eat fruits and vegetables, and contribute to a thriving community in our gardening elective students will plant and harvest a school garden, will learn about soil structure, plant types, irrigation, and hydroponics.

Golf

Have you ever wondered how someone could hit that tiny little white ball so far? Have you ever watched golf on TV and thought, “man, this game looks boring!”? Well, golf is not boring and is actually great exercise and a lot of FUN. This class will teach you the fundamentals of golf, the rules of the game, how to keep score, and yes, you will get to swing a golf club and hit that tiny kwhite ball. You will experience what it is like on a real golf course, except you will still be at school.

Leadership

This course provides opportunities to study, practice, and develop group and individual leadership and organizational skills while making a difference in our school. Skills students will learn include: decision making, problem solving, communication, leadership roles, human relations, and understanding the need for civic responsibility. Students will do things such as plan dances, rallies, assemblies, make posters, plan fundraisers and more! This is a course where you can directly impact our school.

Math Olympiad

Math Olympiad will be broken into two sections, one for 5-6th grade and the second for 7-8th grade. This is an opportunity for students who are good in math to compete at the county level in a team. Math Olympiad promotes excellence in math, raises test scores, increases student's self-esteem, develops problem solving skills and hones both competitive and cooperative skills.

Robotics

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the basic programming as well as problem solving strategies in robotics. This course will involve students in the development, building, and programming of a LEGO Mindstorm Robot and more. Students will work hands-on in teams to design, build, program, and document their progress.

STEAM Challenge

Science Olympiad will be broken into two sections, one for 5-6th grade and the second for 7-8th grade. This is an opportunity for students who are good in science to compete at the county level in a team. Science Olympiad promotes excellence in science, raises test scores, increases student's self-esteem, develops problem solving skills and hones both competitive and cooperative skills. The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows, and athletic games.

The Green Team

Students will learn about environmental awareness and wildlife conservation. The Green Team will also learn about how recycling helps to conserve wildlife/marine life in our ecosystem. Our team will be in charge of educating other students at the school in regards to the benefits of reducing, reusing, and recycling. Students will also work the the Gardening Team on designated projects.

Theater

Through active participation in theater, students in Theatre Arts explore the world of the playwright, actor, designer, and director. While students experiment with movement, dialogue, and expression, they also participate in reading, writing, and performing scripts.

Woodshop

Have you ever wondered how something was made? Do you love the smell of fresh cut wood? Maybe you like to build things; then woodshop is the class for you! This class encourages students to problem solve, to be precise, and to persevere through difficult tasks to completion. Students will be using hand tools and measuring tools, designing and reading blueprints, and using math to construct a wooden game board, a bird house, and their own special design.
